Preventive Wellness Care

Preventive Wellness Care

When it comes to keeping your pet healthy, prevention is the key. Stoney Brook Veterinary Hospital emphasizes wellness exams and preventive care as part of your pet's overall health care plan. We recommend your pet undergo a thorough wellness exam each year, though more frequent exams are encouraged. A "nose to tail" wellness exam can spot diseases and health care problems in your pet before they become more difficult to treat.

Routine exams also help our staff and veterinarians develop a complete picture of your pet's health. Along with a physical exam and routine laboratory tests, we may also ask you about your pet's behavior at home, his or her diet and lifestyle and other questions. This helps us evaluate potential health care issues your pet may face. Exams are also an excellent time for you to ask us any questions about your pet's health care.

Puppy & Kitten Wellness Packages

Kitten Wellness Packages

You've welcomed a new puppy or kitten into your home - congratulations! Bringing a new animal companion into your home is a big step. We offer special discounted rates for your new puppy's vaccine booster visits. The first visit is often slightly longer than a normal exam and give us time to pass along important information about caring for your new companion. We also take the time to answer any questions you may have. Please bring in a fresh stool sample, as well as any medical information that came with your new puppy or kitten.

Emergency Care

For after-hours medical emergencies or questions, please call Valley Center for Animal Referral and Emergency Services, or ValleyCARES at 603-643-6333. ValleyCARES is available each weeknight from 5pm until 8am, each weekend and all holidays. If the case is very critical or needs advanced procedures, you may be referred to the nearest emergency specialty hospital. The closest hospital is the Capital Area Veterinary Emergency Service in Concord, New Hampshire.

Microchipping

Does your pet have a microchip? Each year, millions of pets go missing and many don't make it back home. Microchipping your pet is a simple, effective way to prevent this tragedy. About the size and shape of a grain of rice, identification microchips are encoded with your pet's vital information and implanted beneath your pet's skin, usually between the shoulder blades. Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country are equipped with special scanners capable of reading these microchips - if your pet is lost, the microchip is scanned and the information is used to reunite you and your pet. Stoney Brook Veterinary Hospital uses the Home Again microchip system.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations

Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, many diseases that were once fatal to pets can now be prevented through vaccinations. Every pet has unique needs when it comes to vaccinations - that's why we will work with you to tailor a vaccination protocol that's specific to your pet.

For puppies and kittens, we recommend a series of vaccinations at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks of age. For adult pets, the vaccination protocol is tailored to the individual pet. For older pets (7 years old and greater), we use an extended protocol on core vaccines. Certain vaccines must be given every 6 months (intranasal bordatella, for example) or annually (transdermal feline leukemia or recombitek Lyme vaccine). Core vaccinations are typically given every three years. We recommend an annual exam and wellness plan as part of your pet's vaccination program. Certain breeds or very small dogs may need a special vaccine schedule.

Stoney Brook Veterinary Hospital uses the highest-quality engineered vaccines from Merial and other reputable companies that are prepared with strict safety standards. We strive to remain on the forefront of progressive, positive, evidence-based vaccination protocols.

Cancer Treatment

Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, many pets diagnosed with cancer can successfully beat the disease and go on to lead happy, healthy lives. Pets do not suffer the same side effects associated with chemotherapy as humans and most animals respond well to chemotherapy treatments. We have partnered with a veterinary oncologist to facilitate appropriate cancer treatments. In addition, we provide palliative care and pain management treatments. Dr. Jones is a member of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management.
